Tom O'Connell

ABCA Hall of Famer

O’Connell was recently honored as the 2011 Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association. He was also ABCA National High School Coach of the Year – 2004 and 2010 – and has been named Midwest Coach of the Year four times. In 1995, he skippered the USA Baseball North Team that featured four future major leaguers in the United States Olympic Festival in Colorado.

An accomplished author, O’Connell has published three books with Human Kinetics Press, Coaching Baseball: Techniques and Tactics, one of the top selling baseball handbooks and the textbook for coach licensing in the USA, Coaching Youth Baseball, a manual for youth coaches, and, most recently, Play Ball: 100 Baseball Practice Games.

Coach O’Connell is also a frequent speaker at clinics around the United States having presented at coaching clinics in nine states. For the past thirteen years he has also been Vice-President of International Sports Group, organizing and speaking at winter coaching clinics in Germany, Spain, Slovenia, Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Ireland and Austria. O’Connell has served as the Lead Envoy Coach in Germany for Major League Baseball since 1993 – spending fifteen of his summers developing players and coaches – and is currently a scout for the Baltimore Orioles.

Besides his avocation in baseball, he has been intensely involved with Milwaukee Irish Fest, the largest Irish music festival in the world, serving on its Board of Directors, supervising Festival activities and booking entertainment. He has been married to his wife Paula for 44 years and has three grown children and five grandchildren.

Charlie Greene

Milwaukee Brewers

Charlie Greene enters his sixth season as field coordinator and his eighth season as the catching instructor in the Brewers farm system. As a catching instructor, Greene oversees and evaluates the Brewers’ minor league catchers while working closely with each club’s coaching staff.

A former Major League catcher, Greene broke into the majors with the New York Mets in 1996. He spent five seasons in the majors, also with the Orioles (1997-98), Brewers (1999) and Blue Jays (2000).

Greene spent the last four years of his career playing in the minor leagues (2001-04). He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 19th round of the 1991 June Draft. His father, Charlie Sr., is one of the best known college coaches, having coached at Miami-Dade Community College for 30 years and as head coach for Team USA in 1988 and 1989.

Charlie and his wife, Blake, have two sons, Patrick and Garrett. They reside in Tallahassee, Florida.

Dave Schuler

Colorado Rockies

Thirty Five years in professional baseball, 23 coaching in pitching- rich organizations: New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, and Colorado Rockies.

Atlanta Braves Rehabilitation Coordinator, (2005), assisting to return seventeen post-operative pitchers, with shoulder and elbow surgeries, back to game- competition in a 160-day rehabilitation program.

Pitched in both the American and National Leagues, facing hall-of-famer George Brett in Sept. 29, 1979 debut in Kansas City. Has had over 100 Major League pitchers pass through his hands developing in the Minor Leagues; notably Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Eric Bedard, Sterling Hitchcock, and John Maine, winning seven league championships in ten countries, including Taiwan Major Leagues.

Member of Team USA for the first World Championship Team (1973) in Central America.

Currently pitching coach for the AA Tulsa Drillers in the Texas League where he has led Tulsa to a TL-leading 3.32 ERA. In second season with Drillers. Spent 2010 as Asheville's pitching coach. Was a pitching coach in Yankees organization for seven seasons. Schuler pitched in the majors with the Angels in 1979-80 and Atlanta in 1985. Pitched in TL in 1977 with El Paso. Graduated from the University of New Haven. 

Mauro Mazzotti

Spain National Team

Mazzotti was born in Cesena in 1959, he has a degree in physical education and started his technical job in 1984 being manager for the fallowing teams: Mediolanum, Codogno B.C, the Pirates of Rimini, Fortitudo from Bologne, BBC Grosseto and he came back in 2009 to Rimini with the pirates.
Since last year, he became the General Manager of San Marino.

Mazzotti also has been a scout in Europe for the Seattle Mariners from 1994 until 2006. In 2007 he became the coordinator for the scouting in Europe for the Houston Astros.

As a manager, Mazzotti won 4 Italian cups (1990-91-2003-05), 2 Re-cups (1991-92), 1 Super Euro Cup in 1992, 4 “Scudetti’ league (1999-2003-05-07) and had the coach of the year award in 2005 and 2007. He is the only coach in Italian history to win the Scudetto league with three different teams (Rimini 1999-Bologne 2003 and 2005- Grosseto in 2007). He was part of national staff in 2001 as third base coach and in 2005 to 2007 as a bench coach.

2012 has been a year to remember for the Italian manager as his club team, San marino repeated as Italian champions.
Then, in September, Spain exceeded expectations with a bronze medal at the European championships followed by a World Baseball Classic qualifier win over Israel, good for a ticket for the World's biggest baseball event in March 2013.



Ulli Wermuth

German baseball Academy

At only 31 years of age, Wermuth has already build up an impressive resume with a wide panel of baseball experiences.

As a player, Wermuth played for the German junior National team from 1997 to 1999 and in the German Bundesliga from 1999 to 2007.

During his playing days, he took part to 4 championships. One U15, 2 times U18 and a Bundesliga title.

From 2003 to 2006, he played College baseball at Whittier, California, a NCAA D3 program.

As a coach, he has led various selection teams in the Mainz region since 2008. He is the head coach of the Rhine - Mainz baseball Academy that he started last year.

In 2008, he also became an assistant coach on the German Baseball Academy which led him to have multiple experiences with the German Nationa U18 team.

Since 2011, he took over as the head coach from Mainz Athletics, taking a rejuvenated team to back to back post-season appearances.

In 2011, Wermuth was one of the 5 finalists for the EBCA Coach of the Year Award that was ultimately won by World Champion Brian Farley.

Ulli's brother, Peter, is the CEO of the Australian baseball League. 

Andy Berglund

Without a doubt, Andrew Berglund is one of the most experienced Baseball coaches working in all of Europe.

During his playing days, the U.S. native played multiple positions, gaining experience in the infield, outfield, as well as on the mound.

While in University, he already started coaching--mainly youth baseball, in the US as well as in Europe and Australia.

In 2002, Berglund came to Europe to play in Sweden, where he hooked up with the Alby Stars. While playing, Berglund also coached the Eliteserien team.

In 2006, after working on his Masters Degree in Communication from the North Dakota State University, Andrew set his sights on Europe for good. He came back to Alby to serve as a player-coach.

After taking a year off from coming to Northern Europe in 2007, Berglund made the switch to the Stockholm Baseball club, which he led to its first ever Swedish Championship, again as a player-coach. In 2009 his knowledge and involvement in Swedish baseball helped him become a member of the coaching staff of the Swedish Senior National Team.

As an assistant, he was part of the Sweden team that participated in the World Cup which was played in Europe. Sweden hosted pool C, competing against Canada, South Korea and the Netherlands Antilles.

In 2011, a new chapter in Berglund’s coaching career began: Berglund was named the head coach for both the junior and senior national teams of the Czech Baseball Federation. Besides leading the national teams on the playing field, Berglund also is involved in the Czech MLB Baseball Academy and coaches the Prague Eagles of the Czech League. Only a few months after taking the leadership of Czech National Program, he led the Czech Junior National Team to its first medal ever, a silver in Gijon, Spain. This year his team upset Netherlands in the European Chamionship finishing 5th overall competing agaisnt each eatm. Then he added a line to his resume with a particiaption to the WBC Qualifier.

During his development as a player and coach, Berglund has helped guide ballplayers in different capacities in the US and overseas.

He has worked in all aspects from graduate assistant to head coach. He has been a coach for the Major League Baseball Envoy Coaches program multiple times. Further, he served as a successful head high school coach at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, California.

During the offseason, Andrew has taught as an instructor at the Orange County Gladiator Baseball Academy, ProKids Baseball Academy and Lifeletics Baseball Academy in Southern California and the MVP Baseball Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Adding to this impressive resume is his work for MLB´s RBI program, which is working on "Reviving Baseball in Inner cities“.

During his time coaching, Berglund has worked with and been influenced by quite a few renowned and experienced coaches and players. Among those are Former Texas Rangers Hitting Coach Rudy Jaramillo, and former Major Leaguers Mark McGwire, Wally Joyner, Bruce Hurst, Lee Smith, Art Howe, John McClaren and Bret Barberie. He also studies the modern science of pitching with leaders Tom House and Ron Wolforth.

His voice will sound familiar to a lot of participants as Berglund was also one of the broadcasters for Stadeo TV during the 37th Baseball World Cup in Taiwan.
